ProjectLab.how: Cinematic DIY videos exploring backyard engineering, reclaimed materials, and the best obtainable version of the truth.
I grew up surrounded by handy people. But for various reasons, I never got the chance to work with and learn from them. Eventually, I got the idea stuck in my head that I’d never be truly skillful like they were, that I had missed the boat and would be stuck standing to the side while others did the real work for the rest of my life.
Eventually, I figured out that wow, I was wrong! Most of this stuff is TOTALLY doable. (Especially if someone tells you it can’t be done; be suspicious of those people.) So Project Lab is an attempt to share my learning adventures and, more importantly, demystify DIY for other people who might be standing to the side like I used to be.

5 things I should have fixed years ago | Chevy truck restoration, part 10
My 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 has had a number of important but not critical problems for YEARS. I finally decided: Enough is enough, let's get these tackled so we can call the truck DONE! (That's an illusion of course, because it will never truly be done, but you can't let that stop yourself.) So in this video, I fixed rusty tailgate hinges and a frozen tailgate handle; installed a backup camera with new stereo; changed the serpentine belt, with tensioner and idler pulleys; flattened a frustratingly curvy floor mat; and fixed a broken sideview mirror control switch.

Atezr sent me their L2 36W laser engraver/cutter for review. This machine has almost twice the power of previous generations. Why did bro have the dogs out at 0:40 😮
My truck is going to need leaf springs at some point. I think I’ll just take it to a spring shop!
Nice video, it helps mowing that other people have the same issues wenn working on the truck.
Wait, you saved a stinkbug?
Why on earth wouldn’t you put new tin on the building after all that investment? Jeesh.
Thank you for the no commentary great video
You would think this should be required by law on all riding mowers with how many accidents happen.

This is an excellent video. You covered a lot of points. Thanks! For sharing.

Can do attitude and perseverance, any size shop works. Nice space you ended up with. Go Neil.

“19.1 divided by 2 is 9.55” “9.57 it is!”
Simple?
How are your wood posts doing? Just bought a house with a 28x30 morton pole barn that was built in the 80s. Just discovered that a few of the posts are rotted out right at ground level 😅
I have my shovels welded unto a steel handle because I tend to always break my fiberglass, wood, etc. handles.
awesome video! would love to see more
Thank you for posting again! I always enjoy your videos!
I love the upgrades on the tailgates. I didn't even know they where that easy to replace. I've never seen a chevy guy fix them before....always worn out and won't latch.
Andrew, I have a recommendation . For your following projects, please prepare a can of silicon spray. Every time you dismantle something and see any rubber parts in it, spray it : )
Yaaaaaaassss! FIX IT!!!!
Nice video. I suspect the red terminals you were trying to crimp were made for a larger diameter wire size. Which it why it was not holding. One trick you can do is strip more back and fold the wire in half then crimp the connector.
Good job as always! Nice editing. Too bad these Chevrolets tend to rust away very fast if you don't live in a desert. Looks like it's time to preserve it with a coating wax like Mike Sanders grease. Greetings from Germany and happy Stolzmonat.
Very rust car!
Nice to see new video and glad to see Malcolm and Sadie helping out too. Gonna be "Sweet" ride! Happy Fathers Day!
this truck is getting a new life
Yup!!! Thanks for the watch/comment as always!
Sweet! Always love your posts!
😆 Thanks much as always!
"sweet!" I typically don't use the rear-view camera on my sedan mainly because I have a better bearing of my surroundings from turning around. I only use them for critical parking maneuvers like parallel parking or reverse parking against a wall/curb/bollard, but I understand the practicality of having them for larger vehicles like trucks or vans or SUVs. is the custom license plate purely cosmetic or is it registered with the state? :p
Good, reasonable take on the rear view camera there! Definitely super vehicle specific. We have a small Chevy bolt that has thick pillars everywhere. Good for safety for sure but very hard to see out the back without the camera. Still requires that you keep your awareness and don’t assume the camera is all your have to pay attention to, like you say! And the plate is fake. I just gotta remember to take it off before I go anywhere… 🤣😬
this is amazing. i also picked up a dresser for free with the intention to fix as a side hobby except im a beginner.. this was very easy and I think I will be able to complete the task
Thank you! Awesome to hear, best of luck with your dresser!
I had mine off 7yr ago but felt like 3weeks. I go to change mine bc bushings gone 😂 2 days later and torch and 50k press 😅 I got them replaced. Remember copper or aluminum nickel anti sease lol 😅
Ha, yup! Same here on the passage of time. And good call on the rust prevention!
My Friend U LOVE SOMEONE ALOT !!!!! THAT'S ALOT OF WORK !!!!!!❤😂
😁 She is great!!!!
Living the dream, man. I'm very envious.
Thank you! 👍 Yeah, not sure how I got so lucky sometimes… just gotta try to keep passing it along!
I'll bet that by now you've heard of Evapo-Rust. Tell them what I've won, Monty!
The element Boron is toxic to fungi. Two sources of Boron are Borax (Sodium Borate) and Boric Acid. Borax is a laundry water softener sold in supermarkets and Boric Acid is used in eye drops and sold over-the-counter in drug stores. Used prudently, neither is dangerous to rational humans. I would try adding a teaspoon of Boric Acid to your molasses brew - it is a very weak acid and won't contribute to the rust removal, but it should keep the mold away. Frankly, a better idea is to pour a layer of cheap vegetable oil to completely cover the surface. That excludes oxygen from the molasses soup, BUT you might find some kind of anaerobic bacteria that don't like oxygen growing instead. signed, - a chemistry nerd
The file was crazy. The wrench was crazy. In fact all the tools were crazy.
Great video I have the same mower, a link to the parts used would be nice though
"It kept this perfectly good wood out of the landfill". When millions of people think and act accordingly, beautiful things happen.
I've been soaking some tools for over 12 months now. I started with vinegar/water mix and then added citric acid a couple of months ago. I'll take them out and clean them and see what I've got left. 😁😁 BTW, I've got a footballer's neck too, I do just fine...
Great sense of humor, subbed just for that.
VERY SMART to use the wheel as a jack stand wedge after it's removed from the truck! I've been doing that for decades!!
I would have replaced the deck boards.
Great video pal 😎👍 that boy is Lucky to have a father like you, who's teaching him all the little nick nacks in automotive repair safety... I'm on the same journey with my Silverado... just tackling 1 repair at a time 😮💨 but I know once it is all completed...I will be much happier and satisfied than some dude purchasing a brand New Silverado from the dealership.
Love the no bs. Right to the important parts!
I used to work in a signshop making those burlington siigns and bestbuy ,the way we shipped them was cardboard on bottom, saran wrap the top 1 spin, then cardboard top ,and do another spin, dont wanna use to much saran wrap

The gear shop in Maryland has rebuilt transfer case for $890 with 18 months or $1030 with 36 month warranty. They also update the back casing so as to avoid this problem. Putting one in my 05 silverado in a week.
